I have a 90 Ranger XLT 4X4 with the 4.0L V-6. It has 102K miles on it. Occasionally, I need to drive slow and stop then slow then stop for several minutes. I can smell unburned gas fairly regularly when driving normally, and when I do the slow drive it will sometimes act like it's loading up and I get the "Check Engine" light, but once I drive it normal the "Check Engine" light goes off.

It has new plugs, I've put carb/injector cleaner through the tank, and it passes Calif. smog tests.

Just wondering what I should check on it? I read that the intake manifold bolts sometimes loosen, so I'll check that tomorrow. Just wondering if there's other stuff I can check before I take it in to the shop.

Thanks,
PS, I'm a half assed backyard mechanic that does only basic maintenance, so if it's too technical, I'm probably screwed. (LOL)
