smashed ignition replacement (from repo)

I bought a reposessed 1996 ranger and the ignition is fubared. (guess they used some kind of ignition buster to get it started) I'd like to replace the key cylinder and switch. how do I remove the ignition switch? somebody said all I need is to use a slide hammer but the switch needs to be in a certain position to be removed. any help here would be appreciated

The lock cylinder has to be in the run position and then you jpush in the pin to remove it. There's directions in the tech library somewhere.
