Hello fellow Ranger owners. Let me share my sad story and maybe someone could send me in the right direction. 2004 Ranger Edge 3.0 with 100K miles.

Started skipping, check engine light came on and was flashing. Truck was in some kind of limp mode. Then it went to a solid check engine light and started running sort of ok again. It has since gotten worse so here is what in have done. New plugs, no help. New wires, no help. New coil no help. New cam sensor, no help
Rented compression tester. All are in the 145 to 160 range

What in the world should I do now? Can't afford to put in the shop, can't afford not to?

Anybody with good ideas please contact me. Anyone with bad ideas can contact me as well.....I am just out of ideas.

Instead of throwing a bunch of parts at it get the code(s) so you know which cylinder is causing the problem. Most part store chains will do code reading for free.

Given the parts already replaced I would suspect that the fuel injector is at fault, but you need to get the codes read before doing anything with a check engine light. Run to AutoZone tomorrow, tell them you need the codes read, and then post up the codes. Get the print out, or write them down. We are looking for something in the format of PXXXX, no definitions, none of their recommendations for what to try to fix it, just the P codes.

Sorry I forgot to list that. I had the codes checked the first time and it was misfire on #5 cyl. I then replaced wires , plugs and coil. It ran good for a couple weeks the the skip came back worse than before. Now the codes read multiple cyl misfire. Thanks

did u check ur ignition module? its the box sitting underneath the coil pack..now I don't know if you have a distributor in there or not. If you do check the distributor, they have a pick up coil in them, who sometime will cause misfiring when goin bad

but your probably set up like my 93 4.0L, no distributor so I would try another ignition module, if no better check crankshaft sensor

Uh, yeah, no. So by 2004 the functions of the ignition control module would have been integrated to the PCM. No distributor either. The pickup coil in the old distributor style system was the equivalent of the cam sensor he already replaced.

At this point I would think about taking it to a shop if you can.

Ok so I took it to the parts store today and the code is PO300
That is a random misfire and it really is misfiring. Any ideas? The take it to the shop idea scares me a little. I don't want them to do as I have done so far and just start replacing things.. I am afraid their bill would get expensive quick. I would rather try a couple more things if there are any ideas you may have ..

Thanks very much
