I know I posted about this before and got some good input...but can't find the original post...
Was having problems with my starter...had to get out and whack it a few times...after this got boring (and dangerous) I decided to get a replacment...
After pricing new ones in the range of $175 - $420 (not installed) I decided to try my luck at a used one from the wreckers...
Got the starter but had to wait to find someone to put it in because they used a 12mm bolt and I just couldn't get the leverage on the head to remove it (no lift)...so I had it put in and it worked like a charm...for three days...then it started doing the exact same thing...turn the key and nothing happens...give it a few whacks and it works...
Well, this didn't seem right so I checked the power on the inside of the vehicle and everything worked fine, even the alarm shutoff was checked...so I went out under the hood searching...couldn't find anything unusual after removing and cleaning contacts and checking for bare wires...I suspected a short somewhere or a loose wire...nothing...
Got to the school parking lot (after having problems starting) and when I left the school to head home...no start...nothing...I banged out a pretty good drum solo on the thing and it would not go...but I noticed something different...the starter would click and I didn't hear that before so I thought I finally killed the used one...
While feeling around the starter solenoid (which is attached to the starter on these vehicles) I found that the ground connector for the main motor was loose...and in a very difficult spot to try to tighten...but I managed to get my mini-adjustable on it and cranked it tight...
Presto~!
Starter works like a champ now...the problem was that when I got the used one, I loosened the nut for the ground myself and cleaned the contact, but forgot to tighten it properly...so when the guy put it in and it worked properly I never even thought about it...my fault...
Sorry for the long post...but I've said this so many times...IT IS ALWAYS (almost) SOMETHING SIMPLE...
