Has anyone watched the movie shutter island?

Was the main actor crazy through the whole movie being allowed to act out his delusions, or did they make him think he was crazy while he was there to hide the truth?

I think he was crazy the whole time.

---SPOILER ALERT--- Crazy the whole time. The scene where he "comes to the island" on a boat was his own delusion. He can't take the fact that he's there, so does this little routine to help himself deal with it. The day after he realizes what he did and why he is there, he forgets and is back into "I'm a detective being held here" mode. Also, when he is walking freely around the high security prison, the one prisoner recognizes him and says, "They wont let you leave" because he is the "missing" inmate. "Missing" in quotes because everyone but him knew he was the missing crazy person. If any of this makes sense. Maybe I'm the crazy one. Good movie though

im still so lost! damn movies that make me think.. i wish i understood the whole thing cause it seemed really good :icon_thumby:

Good movie.

When he said something to the affect of "would you rather live like a monster or die a good man" to his physician before walking off with the other doctors to the light house, it made me think he actually did remember and pretended to go back into the fantasy. This way he would get the lobotomy and hopefully forget what had happened with his wife and kids. Like he couldn't live with the pain and anguish of what his wife, and then he had done.

What ya think?

I did more research and found the answer. I was right in my decision.

My 13 year old made a good observation........why did the woman he was interviewing wait until his partner walked away to tell him to run? Because his 'partner' was actually one of the doctors.

I read the book several years ago. I know what happens in the book, but I don't know what the movie is like.

I had to read it a second time to totally understand it. But that's cool. The thing is, you get used to reading things without any actual thought required--"chewing gum for the mind" as my wife says. So I wasn't ready for it the first time and had to go through it again to connect it.

i read it not long ago but i havent seen the movie. who here has seen both?

Ya i'm pretty sure he was crazy the whole time. They weren't really dillusions that he was having during the movie. They were letting him play out him being a detective and do things of dillusions he's had in the past. And at the end he realized what was actually true and didnt want to go on like that anymore so he lied and said that he thought things were still the dillusions.

On a side note, My GF is going to grad school to become a clinical psyhcologist and she was so mad at the end because him lying and saying that he didn't "realize his real life" would set back the Psychology profession... lol
