Should there be noise when hubs are locked?

I am looking at getting a 96 Ranger 4X4 with manual locking hubs. I tried the truck today. I locked the hubs and there is more noise from the front when driving even if i just leave it in two wheel drive with the hubs locked. I was just driving down the road. Is this normal? I know there is more hardware turning but I was just wondering because I dont have expierence with manual hubs. Thanks

You are spinning a whole bunch of metal that you wouldn't normally spin
while driving with the hubs unlocked...

Consider that there are FIVE individual pieces of shaft
SIX U-joints, TWO Slip joints AND the chain inside the
transfer case as well as the front Ring & Pinion.

IF one of those u-joints is slightly stiff it will start other things moving in
undesired ways and it'll all make a hell of a vibration if not actual noise.

Yeah, you'll notice it when the hubs are locked even if everything is "perfect"

If anything is "less than perfect" or two things are you get a rising level of noise
that can quickly turn into a noise that sounds like an ongoing train derailment.

but it's usually something relatively minor.
