Should Rancho RS5000's expand?

I can push them in or pull them out and they stay where they are at. I have 4 total, front and rear, all do the same thing. I know other kind of shocks expand, a guy at autozone said that they should but he didn't sell ranchos so I figured he didn't really know. The gal at Checker (CSK Auto) checked on a pair they had (same RS5000) and they do the same thing (don't expand). These are new shocks, I haven't installed them all yet. Thanks for any replies, I am going to go remove the old ones and hopefully I can install these ones today if they are supposed to do that. Thanks!

No they are fine. When installed the springs will return them to the length needed. All they need to do is dampen.

Just installed Rancho5000's also. They are not gas filled, as were the original ford shocks.
Ride just fine.

OK, thanks guys. I'm having some trouble getting one of the rear ones off. The sleeve that is in the rubber bushing is seized on the bolt. I've tried a c-clamp, unseize stuff, and a big hammer to get it out but I think that I'll have to weld the nut onto the lower mount so I can loosen the bolt out.
