Should I Rebuild The Rest of my Engine?

Anyway, I was told I should just completely rebuild the lower half of engine and what not since its already apart... I'm not sure how much this would cost, and all the parts that I would need? Is this a hard thing to do? I literally have No idea about any of this.. and I'm looking for some help from some of the Ford Techs and anyone who actually knows what they're talking about. This is a big decision and a lot of money & time. So whats all the parts I should replace? Is this hard? etc.. Also I already have the whole top of my engine off and waiting to rebuilt...

my honest opinion, measure the cylinder for taper, and out of round (all cylinders) the taper is most easily noticed by looking for a ridge at the top of the cylinder, with the piston down, basically, the oil rings lubricate the bottom of the cylinder the best, and the top the least, it's very normal, and while the engine is running, it wears the walls down... but because when the piston is at TDC, there is still typically space between the top of the cylinder, and the piston rings... this means that the very top of the cylinder is going to be roughly stock dimensions, and slightly below that, there will be a lip... there's going to be a spec on that also... if it's large, i would rebuild the whole motor (including getting an over bore)

replacing the bottom bearings wouldn't be a bad idea anyways... additional parts, you would be looking at are the bottom end gaskets, bearings, and rings... can't think of anything else... if you're going to do that, you will need to at least, hone the cylinders... so you will need the tools for that...

the part that i would not want to deal with is the clearances with the bearings, and using the plastigauge and such... i've only done it once or twice (bottom end) and had help from my shop teacher at the time

well your already down to the block, theres not much else down there that is categoried under regular maintance. you could replace the rear main seal but on a 2.9 i think the trans needs to be removed, you can replace the oil pan gasket. or say the hell with it and get her bored .40 over

A lot of the cost is dependent upon what you want done. To do it right you really need to get a good machine shop to go through the block and tell you what you need for piston/rod/bearing size. Then you need a good kit with quality parts. Here's a pretty decent kit in the link below. I would suggest doing the Fel Pro upgrade and the Moly Rings upgrade. Someone else might be able to point you to a better deal.

thats me doing gears and locker with only a pair of needle nose pliers:icon_twisted: the posts that get the best answers are pretty specific and have lots of info. i like easy and easy ain't rebuilding an engine,easy is going to autozone or jasper and pick up a long block with a warranty -pop that sucker in and call it good!there are times when a few bearings and a cheap head gasket is the extint of your rebuild-this is what we are doing with my old ranger right now ,$200 used short block,a free canbilized gasket set we got from a supplier and some RTV -but we STILL have a plan and a budget so should you. there is a reason guys have thousands of posts and tons of rep power-they eat this stuff UP!they love to talk about rangers,learn from them (not from me I'm a big goof) and follow the protocol on here and soon your reman 2.9 will be tearing it up!BTW WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!:icon_thumby:
 
How about finding a 4.0L and replace the 2.9L ?
I think it is almost a bolt up.

If you are rebuilding the lower end do the upper too.
If you need a lower end rebuild you either have a rap or low oil pressure and by replacing the bearing all you get are new bearing, what if the Rod Ends have gone a little out of round or maybe the block journals are out of round then the bearing work is for not.
If you do a complete rebuild you need to machine the block to allow for years of wear. Maybe new rods and crank depending on wear and don’t forget the Cam Bearings they will need replacing too.
Next we get into the heads, machining to flatten out the block mating surface, valve job new valves where needed, seats, Guides and seals, maybe new valve springs where needed NO all of them to keep things equal, and that is IF the heads are in good condition, no cracks.
Lets not forget the cam maybe wore out or at least one or two of the Lobes that make things work in the engine, so consider a new cam, lifters, springs, retainers and locks.
the list goes on and on.
A complete rebuild is more money than a lower end rebuild, way more IMO but you might want to consider a long block replacement or as suggest in the first statement maybe even a 4.0L; a 4.0L would be nice...

Get some pricing first and compare the cost of a replacement long block before attempting the complete rebuild and see if there is a JY with a low milage 4.0L and talk to a few people about a swap.
I am not sure f what exactly is needed to swap over to a 4.0L but I friend did the swap to his BII and it was surprisingly improved.
