While I have my 2.3 in pieces, I have the urge to paint it. Maybe blue on bottom, red head, black pulleys, ect. Is the any advantages or disadvantages to painting an engine?
if you do paint it make sure you use the heat paint.. a clean painted motor will be easyer to check for leaks and to keep degreased later...just my $.02
the advantage is it looks cool, and it may in my head but my painted engines have always seemed like they stayed clean better, I think the paint smooths out some of the casting porosity that usually holds on to dirt and grease. If the iron block is bare, it will rust, so it's best to paint it for sure. No disadvantages that I've ever experienced or heard of.
With the head, I paint if its iron, leave it bare if it's aluminum.
use duplicolor engine enamel and go to town. make sure you clean the block with laquer thinner before you lay down any paint. and before you lay down any paint, use duplicolors adhesive promoter, its a thin clear primer that makes your paint stick like crazy. then go to town. you will be glad you did. that way when you pop the hood, you can be proud. and theres no disadvantages to painting a block. it will actually keep it from rusting. so its a good idea.
