Should be an easy question...

I'm thinking about replacing the shocks all around in my 01 Explorer sport. It's a pretty bumpy ride now, way worse than my Ranger. I've heard the suspension isn't the best in these things. I don't want a lift and I'm not concerned about being off-road, I just want a bit smoother ride on the bumpy roads around here. Would upgrading to a better shock smooth it out a bit? Any suggestions?

well yes it would if your current shocks are blown, or worn out

Sorry, should have phrased my question better.
What I want to know, is would it be worth it to spend the extra money upgrading from the OEM shock to a more expensive one, and does anyone recommend a particular brand / model for a smoother ride, without sacrificing handling? OR... Am I kind of stuck with the bumpy ride due to the short wheelbase and the stiffness of the shock that's required?

nah, if your not 4x4in or prerunnin, stock/oem brand would do just find

For stock use, upgrading shock would do nothing for you. Sorry.

No, that's cool. That's what I wanted to know. Didn't want to drop the extra cash if it won't make a difference. Thanks guys.

I think for stock use you won't be able to notice any difference, but off-road it's a different story.

Okay, so I'll replace them with an OEM shock. 135k on the original shocks, I'm sure they are worn. Plus, I'm pretty sure one of the fronts are wasted.
Are "Gabriel" shocks from Autozone crap? That's what they list as my OEM, but I think stock should be Monroe. I also have KYB and Bilstein from other auto sites listed as stock.

As a matter of fact I have the Gabriel Ultra for my 1979 4x4 and they are really great. They do really good taking the bumps without you feeling it in your back.

I tried the Ultras out and they seem pretty good. Still bumpy, but it no longer feels like the truck is going to shake itself to pieces when I hit a bump or pothole.
