i received a shot gun for Christmas a maverick 88 by moseburg but talking to a friend of mine who is a gun nut he told me that some guns require special ammo so trying to keep this as short and non confusing as possible my question is on a "rifled barrel" do i need to use special slugs or shots? sorry if more info is needed this is my first gun.

the gun make and model would prob help some.....

idk anything about guns tho, but how to put holes in things with em, im good at that

If the shotgun came with the owners manual, I suggest reading it first before all others. It will tell you exactly what kind of ammo.

Also, firearms tend to favor certain ammo sometimes. My Glock shoots all brass. My mom's S&W .22LR Revolver is picky and shoots best with Federal. Remington 700 30-06 shoots all rounds while my dad's Remington 30-06 semi can only shoot slivertips to avoid jamming. S&W 629 .44mag has a feather light tigger (seriously, don't lay finger on trigger with hammer cocked), but shoots nicely within a 6" inch spread at 15yds.

i included the make and model maverick 88 by moseburgg

Rifled barrels are for rifled slugs. Some sabots can be used in rifled barrels too I believe. But it's not for shot shells or buckshot.

:agree:
After looking in to it a little. Its looks to be designed for slugs or sabots only. Not buck shot or bird shot.

so just so im sure and dont ruin my new gun i need to go to any place that has knowledge of ammunition and ask for rifle slugs but somthing like a 9 shot will not work on a rifled barrel.

also thanks for all the help.

Any place that sells ammunition will have rifled or sabot slugs. They come in little 5 round boxes, and will say rifled or sabot slugs. Any type of shot is not meant for that barrel, and would be dangerous/destructive to the gun and yourself.

Speaking of sabots, I found a .223 round for a 30-06 with over 4,000fps muzzle. :D

I wouldn't be firing anything but slugs out of it... It's a slug barrel. You can buy other types of barrels cheaply, as it takes any 500 barrel.

You should only shoot slugs out of an IC (Improved Cylinder) or cylinder bore barrel. With an IC choke you can shoot slugs out of any barrel. A rifled barrel shoots the sabots better. A rifled slug imparts a spin in either an IC or a cylinder-bore. The IC is more accurate--much more. The cylinder-bore barrels are defensive weapon barrels for shot. They don't neck down and give the slugs a reliable spin.

For home defense go with #4s. It's a high-brass round and has great power but drywall slows it down enough to protect people you aren't shooting at. We used those and Nycad ammunition when I was a Marine Security Guard.

I have a Maverick 88 from Mossberg as well. I haven't shot sabots through it, I've put about 30 rifled slug rounds through it though. I mostly bought the gun as a cheap one for skeet shooting. So it has seen well over 1000 rounds of buckshot and birdshot. Been using mostly that in it for over 2 years, never had a single problem with the gun. Never jammed, misfired anything. Still dead accurate as well.

Well, if it is a rifled barrel use rifled slugs. If you want the quality of your rifling to stay, use sabots. It never seemed like a good idea to me to use shot shells in something meant for slugs.

I have both a bird barrel and a slug barrel for my Mossberg, I would highly suggest getting either another barrel (I'm unfamiliar with the Model 88, so it might not interchange) or buy another shotgun for bird/small game hunting. You should look into barrels with interchangeable chokes and purchase some of them as well. I have a modified, full, and improved cylinder chokes. Right now I have the full choke in my gun, because I like a good tight pattern. Mossberg Rifled Barrels (If I'm not mistaken) have no specific choke. They are just a great rifled barrel that throws a slug pretty damn well.
