Hi guys,
My 97 Ranger 4.0 started making a quick 1 second squeal on start up. It only does this when the engine is cold and the air temp is below around 35. It doesnt do it if the truck has been in the warm garage overnight, even though engine is cold. Its hard to locate since it happens so quick. I have changed both idler and tensioner pulley. Water pump is 2 years old, changed cam synchronizer a few years back due to chirping noise. Alternator is original ...Any ideas?

Thanks in advanced for the help

was the noise happening before you put on the new belt? silly question but it could be related. also see if it changed if you start it with the AC compressor on or off. you can put a dab of valve grinding compound on the rib side of the belt while the engine is running. it will help give it a little extra bite if it is related to something with the belt slipping from the cold.

thanks for the reply,
The problem was there prior to changing the belt. The AC compressor is off when I start the truck....

Intermittent problems are the worst. If this car was in my shop I would have someone in front of the engine when I started it, to get an idea of the area of the noise. At least that will help narrow down what components it could be.
