Has anyone heard of Shimming a Valve on a 2000 3.0?

I got this truck for next to nothing, the Previous Owner said they had to "Shim the Valve" about once a year. They were sick of it and wanted to get rid of it. The way the inside of the cab looked, I don't think they took care of it. It was trashed.

From what I can tell, it must have been on the #2 cylinder. #2 has lower compression 120# that the ones next to it 150#. the plug is wet, smells like gas and when pulling off the wire for #2 from the coil pack, it does not slow/stumble like it does with the other wires removed, but has good spark. I can hear the engine missing, but very slight. No real valve noise.

I am not much of a mechanic, this is a learning process for me. I have a feeling it has something to do with the exhaust valve or timing? May need a valve job?

I would like to do the repair myself for both learning and cost, I have to have the tranny worked/replaced. This is not my main vehicle.

Any thoughts?

Didja ever have a feeling? I have a feeling the intake valve may have been disconnected..by way of pulling the pushrod for that valve. If the intake is burnt that makes the miss a lot more tolorable.
Unless of copurse the plug simply isn't getting fire thru the wiring..

The wires I am using are new. But I will check them out. What is the best way yo check the wire.

pull the wire off, place it out of the way, start the truck and stick your finger down the wire whole. You'll know if its getting power or not:headbang:

ok ok, not really, do all the same except place the tip of the spark plyug wire again the exhaust manifold and look for the arc between the two. No arc=no spark:icon_thumby:
