Shifting Problem

Hello,
I have a 4 wheel drive, 1998 Ford Ranger, v6, 4.0 L, manual transmission, and about 166,000 miles.

Lately I've been having what I think is a problem. When I go to shift, I press in the clutch, and let off the gas, sometimes the RPM's don't move at all. They even went up a little before dropping. Normally, when i press the clutch, and let off the gas, the rpms drop right away.

Now, the rpm seems to stay high until i put it in a higher gear and let the clutch out, then the rpm drops to the level appropriate for the speed/gear.

What would cause the RPM to hang like that? I don't think I have a sticky throttle or anything....:dunno:

Better not! I just put a new one on last year! haha

I guess my title is misleading. It shifts fine, its just the RPM doesnt behave as I would expect.

I read it wrong, seems that you have a hanging idle problem, I was thinking this was happening when you released the clutch... I'd pull out your IAC and clean it out...

Might double-check that throttle linkage and cable for binding. When I first got my truck, I had to hook my right foot under the throttle pedal and pull it up.
