I think I may have a 89.Mitsu.FM146 shifter on my Mitsu. FM145 Trans. if this is the case will it cause the transmission to get stuck between gears because the pawl inside the trans. slips out of its slot? This is in my 1986 Ranger 2.9, V6,5 speed 4x4,Thanks.

The "slot" is a cup, so no.

The wrong shifter may cause it not to go all the way into three of the six gears; the stick will either hit the dashboard or front seat/console.

If it won't go into gear, it's probably a clutch problem.

When it does this I have to take the shifter and the top cover off the trans (from inside the truck)and realign the shifter rods as the pawl inside the trans is outside of the gate. The shifter itself is good.I have seen the Mitsu.shifter for the 86s has quit a curve in it and is longer, and the shifter I have is straight and shorter. If that makes sense,I'm thinking that if it is the wrong shifter it may have more travel in it to make the pawl inside to come out of the slot(inside where the three shift rails line up).

If you've taken this apart, then you should know that the "pawl" is part of the transmission, connected to the top cover by a pivot shaft.

THAT can be worn, but if it's the wrong part, someone did something STUPID with that transmission.

,OK then,In the drawing where 49 engages 48,48a,48b,49 or (shifter pivot ,part of the cover) becomes misaligned I have to take the top off realign these 48ab so the shifter pivot will go back into this slot(or gate) so it will shift. My sons Ranger has a different shifter so I thought maybe my shifter(if its the wrong one) was making this travel to far and misaligning the shift rails. When I bought this truck the trans was out of it,I rebuilt the trans but it slips between gears every once in a while(usually when shifting from reverse to first),I am a licensed mechanic and assembled it the exacted way it came apart, very frustrating,Thanks for your patience ,Mark.

I don't believe it's possible to put an FM146 shifter on an FM145.

It MIGHT be possible to put a T-K shifter on an FM145 but there will be one bolt hole on the right side that won't line up.

However in my experience an FM146 can get stuck between gears all by itself if subjected to a fore-aft jolt.

The detents and interlock that prevents more than one shift rail from moving often fail to prevent this.

the "cure" is to tremove the bottom cover and physically push
the 1-2 and 3-4 forks into their neutral position.
