i took the shifter out on a 93 ranger i just got for my daughter . there was a lot of play and almost impossible to find third. the passager side pin that fits in the grove on the shifter ball was worn real bad. i spun it 90dgrees and put it back in. it seems much tighter but the problem is it just feels like it is in neutral and it wont go into any gears its stuck in first. should i have put in neutral before taking the shifter out? if so how do i get it in neutral now. i tried a big screw drive but it would work.. Plz help PS its a 2wheel drive

Ok first off this is a transmission topic so I'm going to move it.

Second it's EASIER to reassemble the shifter on the M5OD-R1 trans with it in neutral
but not strictly necissary.

If the shifter is still "sloppy" what you need from your local ford dealer's parts counter to fix it is TWO Ford P/N 1L2Z-7228-AA, they should cost about $10each.

Ford calls them a "spring" but they are really a blue urethane bushing that the shifter ball pivots in.

If the lower one is missing (not unusual) the shifter will be sloppy as hell.

I can also tell you CHANGE the tranny oil immediatly and hope you get most of the plastic chunks.
