I'm assuming the donor tranny is an FM145 or FM146? and the reciever is a Toyo Kogyo? If so the swap should work, i think the ends are the same. And the Caps lock isn't necessary.

im thinking no, but maybe you could change the whole trans out for a M5OD and then you could use that M5OD shifter.

a '88 would have had the "tall boot" shifter so someone swapped a older trans in, I don't think fm145 and fm146 shifters swap but could be wrong, can allways cut the sticks off both and weld the fm146/mazda style onto yours
