I have a 91 Ford ranger 2wd 5Spd.... For the life of me i cant get the shift knob off!!! Any suggestions w/ out damaging the shift knob or the shifter??

same thing with me! I think there press fitted, so we, I have a 92, have to get a whole new shifter too! but I may be wrong, in that case dont listen to me im just CRAZY!!!!:icon_twisted:

Yes they are press fitted on there. My orginal 5spd was just like yalls. The end of the rod is splined like the end of and axle shaft and the knob presses down onto it. Dont ask me how I got mine off, it just came off one day. Had to get going quick and I guess I grabbed 2nd too fast and *pop* :icon_surprised: off came the knob! I would maybe suggest taking the shift lever off, putting it in a vise and beating on the bottom of the knob with a rubber mallet or something of the sort if you dont want to damaged it. Though I cant see any real reason to take it off unless you wanted to put a different one on. Hope this helped.

My advice would be pull the rubber boot down a little, fit a big crescent wrench under the bottom edge of it, tighten the crescent as close to the shaft of the shifter as you can and hit it sharply a couple times. Lookout, because it will pop off of there fast.

Or you do like me and pull like hell until it pops off and punch yourself in the face.

heat it up with a hair dryer and then pull really hard

how about using a piece of duct tape to control the loose knob? press it real tight on the top of the knob, then leave it loose so you can fit the wrench around the shifter shaft, and then wrap the other end of the tape at the bottom of the shifter shaft. that way it won't fly off any farther than the length of the tape. just a thought.

that's a nifty little trick i will have to write down

i got a 97 and it sound like the same thing. i just twisted it off, and it not a twist off type, it was pressed on. it took a bit but it came off and no damage to the shifter

mine popped off one day because the little spacer cracked in 2 i grabbed 2nd and it popped off and the spacer was broke so now it comes off all the time

+1 on Downey's suggestion. If you heat the knob for a while till it gets to the heat sensitive adhesive on the splines it will probably pull of by hand. Pop off the shift pattern disc first so it does not get warped.

Okay, saying I do get this damn thing off, does it have threads? or just splines? the shifter knob my ex gave me does not have a set screw

they're all splined. unless you have a hurst shifter like i do. you'll need a set screw and maybe even a plastic sleeve depending on the shift knob you have.

I welded a bolt to the top of mine and put a T-handle on it.
