I have a 93 Ranger automatic 4x4 with a 4.0 and here is my problem

My shift indicator has always been off a little, not much but park would be between reverse and park. Yesterday I started the truck up and headed down the mountain, when I arrived in town I noticed that park was now before reverse. The shift lever won't pull down far enough to go into drive. Quick fix to get home was start the truck put the e-brake on pull the shift cable and put the transmission in drive by hand. This morning I get on the tech page and see the write up about adjusting the cable at the column. I check everything and no broken or bent parts there SO I start turning the little adjusting wheel. I can't take up enough slack to make the thing go into park and drive. So back under the truck I can't find any bent or broken parks on the transmission or cable. The cable is about a inch to long to reconnect it to the shift lever on the transmission when both are in park, I can't find any sort of adjuster screw or anyway to take up the slack. I really need to get on the road today, I must be missing something probably something easy. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
