i noticed that my Shift Knob is held on by some weird machine bolt looking thing, is there any way to replace this with an aftermarket one? and if so how do you do it? and where can you order them from. thanks

My shift knob is missing completely and can't find a close replacement anywhere, I'd like to stick with one that's close to OEM as possible. Seems people lose them and are not to inclined to replace them as I find quite a few vehicles that have shift knobs missing.

if you pull off the cap that has the shift diagram on it you see a weird machine bolt. i don't have any pictures on hand and my truck isn't here right now, i'm building my grille guard, and its at my friends house because he has a better welder, a portable band saw, and a warmer shop...

I know a few people here have mentioned something about buying an aftermarket knob of your choice and using epoxy to install it and you'll never have to worry about it unless you change transmissions later possibly.

walmart, kmart, advance auto and autozone all carry nice aftermartket shift knobs with different fittings to make them fit any shifter on the market, and they are usually $20 or less. I got a nice hurst T handle shifter at autozone on sale for $15 a few years back and have lost it. I have also drilled a hole into a golf ball before and threaded it onto my shifter, looks awesome and feels cool tool, unique as well. i have a carbon fiber and aluminum on in my ranger now, might can get some pics in a couple days, its one of the autozone ones. most aftermarket ones have 3 allen screws you tighten around the base to hold them on firm.

Just seems like the ones I find just don't look right for me. Thought about getting a shift knob out of a semi-tractor and putting in just to make people wonder, no-no really it has a 13 speed in it, technically its a 10 speed with the hi/lo in the transfer case LOL.

It's just pressed on, no threads on these things, mine came off on me while I was driving in the summer on a hard shift into second gear...

At least it was just the knob that came off, my uncle had the whole shift lever come out of an old Plymouth he had, he handed it to my grandma and asked her to shift for a while, she never rode with him after that LOL.

Oh the Noobness of this thread...

There is no weird machine screw. The knob is pressed onto a splined shaft.

And whoever said that the shift knob had to be removed to remove the transmission...?

Anyway... While I'm here, this is my custom knob, shown in my 98, same in my 94, and soon to be in the 88.
