sheared teeth on the flywheel and headgasket sealer questions

Just trying to cut my excitement off before I get started on the project. Since the engine stops and starts at the same point, the starter has worn away at the teeth on the flywheel to the point it won't engage. So I am thinking about remounting the flywheel 180 from where it is while I am down there replacing the oil pan gasket.

Also, whatis the best headgasket sealer to use? I was wandering around a couple autoparts stores and prices ranged from 6.99 to 53.99(guaranteed).

I'm just trying to keep this 2.5L gem running for the least amount possible. Once I finally got the timing right, it ran better than before the timing belt break. Thanks for all of your help on that.

if it always starts and stops at the same time, Which I wouldn't think it wouldn't.

Why not just turn the engine by hand? so instead of having to pull the trans and take everything apart you only have to pull one spark plug. If you started top dead center you just do 180 from there.

Change the flywheel and don't use any sealer on the head gasket

I've turned the crank by hand 45 degrees and was abe to start the truck. when I turned it off and tried to start it again the starter wouldn't engage. Did the same rotation of 45 degrees and was able to start the trunk. It's not really an option to do that every time. I've been finding hills to park on but I'm sure I'll have to park on flat land at some point. Only reason I was going to replace the flywheel was due to being down there to replace the oil pan gasket whick is leaking like a sieve due to the coolant getting into the oil. yeah, I know. motor is junk.

Blue Devil gasket fixer was recommended as a last resort. Knowing that the engine needs to replaced, I'm going to give this stuff a shot in hopes that I can get a little more life out of it.

I've seen that blue devil gasket fix work on a few cars. It's decent stuff when there's no other hope but its a little pricey...

Pshaw.

You aren't gonna reposition any flywheel without pulling the transmission.

If you do that, $80 is well spent on a new flywheel. Inspect the clutch, replace the slave ($45) while you are in there.

I could carry a socket and ratchet for the crank bolt for a long time, if I wasn't in the mood to pull the trans and replace that flywheel. It's not fun done alone. That oil pan gasket ain't no walk in the park either. Wear some of those nitrile gloves, that's gonna be a mess.

It is doable in a weekend.... a long hard weekend for me. I just did this not 4 months ago had a bad starter that ate the flywheel. I did clutch slave and whatnot.

I really think that the flywheel would not come to rest at the same spot every time. I would be more inclined to think that it is the starter not spinning out and engaging as it should.

This is pretty much the same road I went down. I could hear the starter spin up but wouldn't spin out to engage flywheel turns out I had switched spark plug wires and had a timing issue that I had not noticed for a few thousand miles which made it hard to start. After all was said and done it starts and runs like a top....

If it was me I would take the starter out and test on a bench. also test your wires and battery if it does not have the correct voltage it will not spin out like it is suppose to. Maybe if your feeling spry go to the junk yard or auto store and get another starter.
