Shaking rear end,

Trying to track down this wobble shake on the back end at 40-65 mph.

Truck it is up on stands.

The back right side wheel is off,

there are no balance weights on the brake drum. the axle flange has a very very slight wobble hardly even perceptible guessing 1/16" or less.

The axle bearing moves not even a 1/32" an inch up and down but does move.

End play is very snug, I would say under 3/16"

Weather permitting, tomorrow we will check the left side and then both sides running in gear without the brake drums.

I guess I need to ask what the run out? of the flange should be within?
 
I don't know the proper acceptable amount of runout, but I do know that these axles (28 spline) bend rather easily with the smallest hit directly to the side. I've bent em doing donuts in grass and hitting small depressions in the ground. I have a bent flange on my 8.8 right now and it wobbles like mad at 55 on the dot. Any faster is gonna destroy the truck. lol

The numbers you posted above are way bigger than they should be, but I know you are guestimating...

Tire issues come up around 45-60mph from my experience that is usually an out of round issue (broken cord). I'm trying to remember back to my bent and twisted rear driveshaft but I think it was about 30-60mph. Getting anything on the rear axle to be bent or off center would be hard, if anything would do it I imagine I would have that problem now since my current axle has a twisted tube and in the incident that caused that I bent and twisted the rear driveshaft, bent a leaf spring and broke the output bearing retainer in the transfer case and pierced the radiator... not something that happens on a normal street driven vehicle :).

The other thing that stands out is if memory serves you have an extended cab which means carrier bearing in the rear shaft, I haven't ran into that personally (only had/have one vehicle with one, and it's tight) but I've heard of horror stories over the years...
 
Denise... I just want to point out one simple fact before I continue. No place on any vehicle I have worked on is 3/16 inch end play considered "very snug".

All the things you are visual inspecting/measuring with a tape measure really require a measuring tool capable of measuring down to .001 of an inch.

With that said... if you can "see" a wobble at the axle flange... it's bent.

If you can move the axle up and down inside the axle bearing .060 inch as you stated... the bearing is bad.
 
In/out (or towards-you/away-from-you if your sitting in front of it) movement on the axle is fine, and normal (movement parallel to the ground). Any up/down/side-to-side movement is a trashed bearing, and it should be making a god awful noise (movement perpendicular to the ground or front-to-rear of the vehicle).

x2 on the carrier bearing.

A wheel could have thrown a weight, rotate your tires around and see if it moves with the tires.
 
No more carrier bearing! We put a new old one piece d shaft with new U joints in, about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

The tires & wheels on the back were on the front they've all been balanced and through all this the shake has been present at 45 to 60 mph. I'm not ruling out a possible bad tire even though they were practically new.

Weather permitting, today we'll get the other wheel up on blocks. and yes I believe any wobble of the flange is a bent axle, and any up and down movement is a bad bearing.

Looking at the cost of one axle, brake drums, shoes, bearing, wheel cylinders (one is leaking so far) is all making an Explorer rear end very appealing. Lol

Oh! new shocks went in last week.
 
Yes been doing that, and that is why I'm trying to find the shake wobble, still have a spring perch & bad bushing to replace.

It's a tough decision Found an Explorer rear with my ratio (3.27) near local $350.

Can't find any under $300. Drums, shaft, bearings, shoes on mine will be close if not more.. Yes I know the new old would need pads and rotors etc. But they are a stronger rear.
 
Yes. That's the best method. Make sure the flange is clean.

Don't have it. do have a digital caliper. It wobbles.. no mistake there. how much TBD
