I just got to the point where I wanted to fix the dragging brakes and very scary rear end hopping pretty much all the time.

You can't see or feel the aggravation but there was plenty of that! Overthe past month up to yesterday 9/9/15

All new parking brake cables installed mostly by me. (my bro in law cheers me on) Sigh.

Shop I trust went to work on the beast and:

Rear brake shoes had 2 primary shoes on the passenger side. (paid the former owner to do this right LOL )

replaced rear brake cylinders, ( broken bleeders,) air in the lines

All new shoes, hardware and springs on the 10" rear brakes
.
Finally after 3 sets of drums they turned the last set and got them right.
(they must of been going out of round from the heat when they were dragging. )

turned front rotors, (driver's side had bad wobble in it.)

Front drivers side wheel bearings were disintegrating, (replaced and repacked, and repacked the other)

pulled the RABS valve and joined the brake line with a union.

new front pads and all the anti-seize compound was used in the the right places.

Power bled all the lines and cylinders. (they have a "I gotta have one of them! machines for bleeding brakes)

Road test... no more rolling egg sensation, no more back end hop and feeling of gyration in the drive line.

We could have done this but sometimes it's worth it to pay. (thank gawd for credit cards)

The beast still has some issues and is a long term restoration project. But at least now the rolling stock is ok and I can drive more then local. I've been around a long time never dreamed I'd see the day that drum brakes could be such a problem.. Thing is almost all this was caused by the POS RABS.

The beast stops on a dime now!

Good to hear you fixed it...:icon_thumby:

Emoticons are your friend...there's a whole whack of them on here with just about everything covered...I rarely use them myself but they are therapy sometimes...I hope you greased your sliders and pins as well, as those are the problem area on front disks...and those anti-clatter thingies...

Shaking, braking, rear end flop
Got a leak get out 'da mop
Slipping sliding on my left flip flop
Baby, you got to stay away from me
'Cause of you I can't take a pee

Oh...I thought you were writing a new song there, Bro....lol

Glad you got that fixed...Darn, my music mind just spends a lot when I see and hear something....lol

I was "allowed" to watch the whole take the wheels and hubs off the front... not sure I'm willing even though now I know what's involved. Yes, all the pins and rub surfaces were coated with a copper like of paste.

No problem...I'm sure I can acquire one...

I usually used snow as weight in winter...best when it's a bit wet but it eventually settles and I get where I need...when I don't need it I just shovel it out on a back road...

yes we always did that with open pickups but it now has a cap on the back. and I want to keep the bed dry so it doesn't rust.
in addition to the cap there are patio blocks & spare tire in there now.

The Rat's rear brakes were a PITA. The final fix was replacing the equalizer widget for the E-brake cables. I got a perfect one for 10$ from a JY. EVERYTHING in the brakes aft of the proportioning valve is new. Up front, I saved the rotors and the MC. :D

Andy have a photo and more information on that fix??

It's pretty hokey that one cable pulls the other.. designed to drag/pull imo :dunno:

just another update! took an actual long ride yesterday to a friends party over an hour away, brakes do not seem to be dragging anymore!

brake pedal rises up a little bit after driving it so I don't know if it's flex brake lines or the booster check valve. There's a shake on driver's side rear, hope it's balance of the new tires,

Sorry, no pics . My dragging brakes were caused by the rear cables being rusted in side their housings. I was warned not to break the equalizer as they are NLA . It crumbled when I went to replace the cables. I wired the cables together. I couldn't get the E-brake to work until I got a new equalizer. The new(er) widget came with a tensioning spring. When I put installed it, I also took out a good amount of slack in the front cable by zip tying it to the bottom inner fender support.
