I just pullted out my transmission to replace the slave cyl and noticed quite a bit of play in the main shaft. You can literally wiggle the front all about but the back end where the transfer case attached, the shaft is totally solid. (Video and picture links below) Is this okay or is it the bearing inside the transmission, If the bearing, how difficult is it to replace?

The rig is a 4x4 2002 Ford Ranger, 5 speed

Thank you for your time! Need to get this running asap!

Something is obviously wrong, so the next step would be to tear it apart and find out what exactly.

Input shaft bearing is bad,but this is only a guess since I can not see what the problem is.

I'm not near a trans to check, and don't have first hand knowledge about the slop you show in your vid. But there is a bearing in either the crank or pressure plate that would support the shaft right where you were grabbing it.

That seems like a lot of play but normally a transmission input shaft will wiggle some that far out. As already mentioned, the pilot bearing is there stabilize that. That amount of wiggle may be too much but if it is solid at the transmission, I am thinking it is OK.

It's also possible that somebody's been in that tranny before and didn't get the front bearing retainer adjusted correctly (too much shim/gasket).

AS I can no longer reply to these threads I'll insert my comment here:
Too much shim is not likely to be the cause, Not enough likely is...
But what is more likely is a worn rear bearing retainer.

The trans likely has to come apart just to diagnose the issue.

I just checked 2 m5od and they both have a lot less slop than shown in your video. I could move the end about 1/8" in any direction.

Again I'll insert text here:
Either the input shaft or the output shaft should move enough so you can feel the play, but you should never be able to see it
