Why do the Chevy fans wan't to flip their shackles so they are like the factory Ford setup and the Ford guys want to flip their shackles so they are like the factory Chavy setup? Both claim to do it to improve articulation.

cuz they simply do improve articulation 
and either lower or lift your truck depending on the set up
and either lower or lift your truck depending on the set up

The following is just my opinion on some minimal research I did for my shackle flip, and could be way off base.
I believe Ford guys flip their hanger to improve ride (spring performance due to front-back spring eye ratio). I'm not a Chevy guy but I assume they flip to shackle-under-hanger to create more lift (it seems more difficult to add lift with shackle-over-hanger setup).
Like most mods, some people do it to fullfill their needs while others do it just because somebody else did.

i was told that flipping your shackles on your ranger also gives more upward travel
