Would this happen to be a speed sensor?
Are they now back on the transmission instead of going through the axle ABS sensor?

If so, anyone happen to know any details on it?
Like...

1.
Will it fit in the speedo port of an older transmission or 4WD T-case?

2.
Does it use original-style speedo gears? Or is it a magnetic (hall-effect) thing with a tone ring inside around the output shaft?

3.
Would this again allow for correction of your speedometer by simply matching the axle gear ratio to a larger size tire?

Yes, that is the VSS. I have no idea if it would fit in the speedo port of an older trans or tcase. It looks to be almost identical to the VSS used in the rear diffs...connector looks the same. I would bet it is a halleffect sensor.

Interesting.

They must've moved it back when they did the disc brakes/roll stability thing for '10.

I would bet it is a halleffect sensor.

:iamwithstupid:

It looks centered on the output shaft. If it was gear driven it would be above or below the centerline of the shaft.

Good point.

Back to doing some research...

I cant seem to find anything about going through the shop manuals....might have to do a bit more digging.

Had a peek at one on a 2010 ranger that was in the shop getting tires today. Definitely a VSS, and yup its a hall-effect sensor. There is no more VSS in the top of the rear diff housing, nor a spot to put one.

Appreciate you digging up what you could :icon_cheers: (that was something I hadn't checked was for a sensor on the diff when I snagged the pic)

I'm probably gonna have to do a little more digging of my own down at the local dealer I s'pose.
