So I was driving through town today and saw for sale a Second Gen ranger with a 2.3 and 4X4, they want 800 for it but the four wheel doesnt work, it has an electronic 4 wheel drice selector, I am curious if anyone could help me trouble shoot a little to help with deciding to make the purchase, i was thinking that it might be the acuator. Do these comoonly go out? anything would be helpful, thanks

To my knowledge, generally just taking the shift motor off of the back of the t-case (3 screws) and cleaning it and putting it back together solves the problem.

On mine, ther was just a simple rubber bushing/ spacer thing that got crushed causing the motor to turn too far, in turn causing the computer to "loose track" of what gear the transfer case is in.

I'd say jump on the deal and worse you have to do is buy a shift motor from a wrecking yard.

Actually, I have a shift motor if you wanted it, but you would probably pay more for gas alone to get over here (35 miles southeast of Seattle, by Auburn) than you would just buying it from a yard.

Check the fuse under the hood before you go pulling stuff off. That was the problem with my 90's push button 4x4. Took only a few seconds to put the new one in, and it's been working for 4 years. If that doesn't work, then check the shift motor like above.

I'd say buy it and worry about the rest later...those are rare nowadays...and it has all kinds of potential...could be an easy fix or it may need more extensive work...if you have the money to spend you could probably recoupe that in parts alone...maybe offer them slightly less though...try to find out if they know of anything else that may be wrong with it if possible.

The Auto hubs could be the entire problem too. Or just the button on the dash.
You need to know if Seller's diagnosis of the 4WD not working means it has no torque at the front wheels or at the front driveshaft.
Coworker of mine thought his t-case motor was bad but snapped the t-case output shaft before getting around to changing the motor. Replaced the t-case and shift motor but still no four wheel.
Hubs had already been converted to manuals without helping. Eventually changed the push button and everything straightened out.
