Second gear start

94 super cab, 4L, 4x4, A4LD. Most Fords I've driven will start in second if selector is in 2. My son says his never did, is this "normal" for the A4LD? Recently lost second, broken intermediate band. Is there something else that needs to be replaced when it's down for the band? Plan to do OD band at same time. Sucks, so much $$ for a $10 part. Any suggestion on what else to do while it's apart? Not doing comeplete O.H. to much $$, trans seems fine otherwise. Thanks.
