Seat Repair
I also have 01 with extended cab and had the same thing happen with the wires poking through the back of the seat. There are two wires welded to the seat frame in the middle of the seat which broke at the welds. I disassembled the seat and tied coat hanger wire around the frame to repair. Since the new wire is able to move slightly on the frame, I figure that it won't be as likely to break as the originals, which broke where it flexed at the welds.
These instructions applied to my 2001 extended cab and may not be applicable to all years and models.
To remove the seat cover, there are two pieces of plastic at the bottom of the seat, one attached to the front part of the seat cover, one attached to the rear. They are in the shape of a J and hooked together. There are some barbs which help lock them together. Look at them from the end and you should be able to see how they are interlocked. Once you start disengaging them they should come apart. Pull the front of the seat cover forward and the rear back. Unfold the material at the sides of the seat from under the foam and start turning the seat cover inside out to pull it over the top of the seat.
The seat cover is held to the foam with velcro running up and down in the contours and another piece running side to side at the headrest. After you get the seat cover unhooked from the velco and turned inside out about half way up, it should be able to be pulled up and off.
The foam is held on with the two ends of the wires at the bottom and is form fit around the frame, but just lifts out.
In my case both seat wires were broken at the bottom and one ended up breaking off at the top. I spliced the one that was broken only at the bottom with an electrical butt splice, but this wouldn't hold. For the real repair, I tied two lengths of heavy coat hanger wire from the top of the frame to the bottom in the same place as the original wires. I used two lengths on each side and made sure they were well tied to the frame. Since I had it open, I also put a layer of tape on the back of the foam where it lay on the wires to help reinforce the area.
To reassemble, fit the foam and make sure it is seated in the proper place. Get a large plastic bag and put it over the foam from the top. Use a thin bag that doesn't make noise when it crumpled, because some will remain in the seat after you tear the rest out. The bag will keep the velcro from engaging until you are ready and will help the seat cover slide over the foam.
Slide the seat cover over the foam and pull it down to the bottom of the seat. Slide it around until it is in the proper position and then reach up under the cover into the headrest area and tear the plastic bag off, hook the velcro between the seat cover and the foam. When you are satisfied that the cover is in the proper position, re-hook the J clips at the bottom.
I only did this about a month ago, but it is doing OK so far.
