Ok I posted this on RPS so I'm sorry if you may have seen it there.

My truck, a 99 FFV makes a screeching sound on cold starts. It doesn't do it every time, pretty much just when it has been sitting over night. It does it as soon as the engine starts, and only lasts about one second. Once it stops there aren't any other unusual sounds. I've had the truck about a month, and this just started about 4 or 5 days ago.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joey

Haha that is my concern the screech of doom. I think you may have meant the cam synchronizer, but that is my biggest fear I guess. Do they typically make that sound? I've done some reading on them and from what I gather the cam sync makes a squeaking sound that doesn't stop.

This sound stops right away.

Thanks for the replies,
Joey

Mine does the exact same thing. Been doing it for months now. Remove the belt and start it. If it doesn't make the noise then It's probably your belt tensioner.

My 2000 4WD 3.0 started doing that a couple months after being partially submerged in a river (long story). I pulled the starter off, took it partway apart, cleaned it with brake cleaner and greased up the bendix gear shaft with Lubriplate. Problem solved.

I would do a cold start with the serp belt off if the starter clean/grease doesn't work. I realize the starter job is harder, but I really think it is the root of your problem. The gear is slow to disengage.

My truck started doing the same thing after a day of hard mudding. The noise started ononly cold sarted but increased till every start sounded bad enough i didnt wanna start it anymore. I ended up replacing the starter . Noise hasnt returned. IM sure taking it apart and cleaning it would work to.

sounds like the tensioner to me. mine did it as well. turned out the post that holds the tensioner in place was broken off so it turned some, enough to keep tension on belt but enough to keep it on.

I need to replace all my belt components on my explorer. It whines a little while driving. On start up it occasionally screeches. It's such a tight space I've been lazy about switching to new parts.
