Wow, you really are out of the loop.
Almost all shocks are still hydraulic, but most come gas-charged, which just keeps pressure on the fluid and keeps it from foaming up if the shock cycles quickly, which can reduce performance.
I don't know what you can get for what price in your area, as prices do tend to vary from one area to another, but I am pretty partial to KYBs. I had a set on my truck for years and it would just glide over the road. I replaced them with the NAPA house brand about two years ago, and by comparison I am very far from impressed with the NAPA ones. I feel like that is saying something since I am not that picky about things like that.
