I am planning my build and have decided to go with a dana 60 in the front. I was wondering how much does it need to be shorten. I know the dana 44 is 6 inches. Also, should i use a ford 9 inch in the rear or a dana 60. I would used a dana 60 from an E250 or E350 and the 9 inch would come from a f100. This is because I can find them easy in junkyard.

A rear 60 would be stronger than a 9", but a GM 14 bolt would be a lot stronger than a rear 60, and are equally easy to find.

What's the rest of your power/drivetrain going to be? Tire size? Terrain?

i want to run 44 inch tires on street. and 38 muddin. i plan on putting a 351w.

also i found a dana 60 out of a 01 f250. the id tag is 373 1c34 ja 61107 1-4. one of the knuckles is cracked or bent. i guess it got in a wreck. would this be a good dana 60 to get

the dana 60 had been in a wreck and the ball joint snapped and the knuckle broke and put a notch where it mount to the housing. So I would have to get the C part replaced. Would it be worth it for $200 or should i look for another dana 60 for front?

Look for another Dana 60. Preferably one from a 1997 or older F350 SRW.

I'll definitely second the motion for the GM14FF.

Just curious as to what part of a stock 60 rear is stronger than a 9" rear? 99% of the 60 rears out there use only 30 spline shafts.

One of the biggest benefits of the 60 rear over a 9" is the 60 is full float. Which means your wheel doesn't fall off if you break a shaft.

neither does a 9" noob,it's not full float but the axle shaft it held in with 4 bolts, should you break an axle shaft on a 9" it doesn't matter:thefinger:

But you have to disassemble the axle to get the shaft out. D60 just take the 8 bolts (I think its 8) off the axle flange.

Exactly, You don'teven have to pull the tire and wheel off. Which is great for a fast trailside fix:thefinger:

would a dana 44 work ok for 44" on street and 38" in mud. Cause i have found a 75 bronco dana 44 with open knuckle. I figure do the disk brake conversion, replace axles with chrome moly and 760x u joints, then run a ox locker or air locker?
