So i just did a sas on my ford ranger. I used a 79 f150 dana 44 axle and i narrowed it 5". When I am 4wheeling, the front of my truck hops really bad! what do i do to stop it???

Whats your set up? Are you using radius arms? Did you check the pinion angle? Did you use radius arm "c" degree bushings? Whats your lift height? What springs? What shocks? How is your track bar set up?

Does the front axle gear ratio match your rear's ratio? (within .05)

haha as far as the gearing goes, ya they are both 5.13. There is a mini spool in front, i am thinking that may have a little to do with it. Also, ya the shock absorbers are from my little four inch lift. they may be to small.
I will put some pictures on tomorrow. Maybe you guys can spot something i need to change.
thanks guys

I would say the mini-spool is your ultimate problem. What does it do with the hubs unlocked? I would atleast look into a lockrite ratchet locker for the front and get rid of the mini-spool. That's some axle twisting stuff right there.

That ALSO sounds like your track bar is off/loose/broken.

so here are some pictures of what i got going on. sorry about the pic quality, it was taken with my tablet pc.

Explain how a mini spool causes wheel hop please.

well you can see the answers to most of these questions in the pictures.

but the pinion angle is less the 1 degree, so i don't see a problem there.
those are 3.5 in early bronco lift coils. Total suspension lift is probably about 8 inches. The Shocks are 4in rough country Hydro 8000 series.

Does the axle hop when you are trying to climb something or does it just hop in general suspension cycling during normal driving?

Are the shocks used?

And WTF is the monstrosity attached to your pitman arm?

My buddy had the same problem with his d44 swap, tuned out to be a combination of worn radius arm bushings and C wedges.

So do you even know what a locker is or how they work?
Im still waiting for a explaination on a spool causing wheel-hop... Please,,,, i really wanna hear this!!!!!

Anywho, to your problem.
Everthing looks great on your SAS. I would redo the drag link pitman arm setup. Single shear on a 4in bolt, its GOING to break. Take my word for it,please!!

As far as wheel-hop, everything looks fine. I say spring/shock/ tire issue. Try increase/decrease tire pressure 5-10psi at a time and try that. Its easy and free.
After that, try different shocks. I like the cheapy rancho 5000's. $50 ea at Oriellys.
Good luck and keep us updated.

I disagree with everything in this post. Wheel hop with a spool is simple to explain and I am pretty sure you could youtube it if you looked hard enough crank the wheel over locked down and goose it. Inside tire wants to spin at a different speed than the outside one depending on conditions that can and will lead to axle wrap and eventually wheel hop.

The angles look decent the pitman arm crap can't feel good and I would be willing to bet let's the front float and do whatever the hell it wants. On top of that ALL of the tubing looks like its should be on the front of a stock TJ not a 3500+ lb truck with a D44 under it and real tires.
