I posted a while back about a bucking/hesitiation issue with my 98 ranger. Well many people said that it could be egr, related.

My question now after getting some input from a ASE friend was that the fuel pump might be going out.

Now consider this.

When the bucking issue occurs my valves begin rattling loudly under load, when I accelerate they rattle and my truck bucks.

Could this be related to fuel starvation?

this issue is intermittant, it can occur at anytime and never at the same time.. I can be driving for 30 mins with no issue then take a curve or stop at a stop sign and the issue starts so I'm not sure if its just a filter issue.

I am thinking its something else like a faulty system.

Any ideas

I have a 98 XLT 4x4 5spd, 89k Ranger

Run the truck and test the pressure at the fuel rail and see what that turns up, it will tell you if its a fuel issue.

thanks! that seems to be the concenus from a few other people as well..

yes lean fuel can cause detonation usually which is the valve rattle you hear. the truck could be bucking because of the lack of fuel it might be your injectors too. they have filters on them also so if you hav crappy gas it could clog them up. but it could be other things it is not easy to diagnose. of course the 3.0l rattles alot anyways

From past experience bucking, jerking loss of power under load can be EITHER fuel starvation or coil. If you take the fuel pressure at idle you may get proper pressure but if you could take pressure under load with bucking you may see low pressure. Access to a dyno would help a lot, but lacking that you may just have to replace parts to see what works. I'd replace the fuel filter first, that's cheap. I'm not sure the valve rattle shows lean, as a lean mixture is hard to ignite and so pre-detonation would not occur - I think, but can't be sure.

Syncronizer shaft will also provide these very same symptoms, particulaly over 3000 rpm and it will not throw a code, as it is not monitored over 2500 rpm. Remember this handles spark and injector timing.............
