Rustys shop thread....

Use my Peat Moss for oil dry?

No... cause I don't want to start my garden seed in floor dry.

Just don't use clumping cat litter. I'd also recommend leaving the floor bare concrete once you get it clean. We built a new shop in 2000 as part of a $1.5 million renovation and I argued against coating the floors but the owner wanted them coated so that's what we did. Every time we needed to use a torch we had to cover the floor with a welding mat,if it was wet at all it was slippery and if there was a drop of oil on it it was worse than glare ice. A little snow on the floor made it even worse and forget stopping quickly if the floor was even damp. We had a "cleaning" crew come in every weekend and scrub the floor. They were supposed to sweep the floors but they'd wash the dirt into the drains and plug them up, then complain that they drained slowly. They also often sprayed water on the tool boxes so I'd call them up Monday mornings and chew them out. They didn't listen very well until I offered to have some of the techs come in and "discuss" it with them.

Peat moss > oil dry, cat litter, etc.

No need to stomp it in, picks up grease if it sits on it a while, and doesn't harden to the floor. If you shuffle it around with a broom after an hour or so it'll draw more up than oil dry ever would. Plus, you can burn it after using as long as it's not wet.

Only thing that we've found that will pick up honey oil (injectable colloidal grease we use to hold seal while our winch line is in an oil/gas well - will hold back 15,000 psi of pressure with ease). Soaks up literally anything you throw at it.

What if I throw a dead body at it? Will it soak that up?

OK, Google says "yes"

I can confirm that floor sealing is a horrible idea. Our hangar has it and all the conditions described. It is and was a horrible idea ginned up by those who don’t do mechanical work but drive a desk.

I used some free white road line paint once. It looked great, didn't slip on it, was durable...
Except it got dirty quick.
BraKleen would dissolve it.
So,
Not worth the hassle.

I consider my garage floor to be a tool, not a shelf in a display case. Anyone who doesn't like the way it looks is free to leave, I get more done alone anyway. See grumpy old man thread for details.

It actually turned out pretty good this time. Most the floor was fine but there was a couple really nasty spots. I soaked it in krud kutter, sprayed it, then dumped gas on it (yeah i know), scrubbed it, sprayed it then used dawn and sprayed it lol.

I had no intention of sealing/epoxing the floor. Im not a fan of the shiny look and its to slick.

dont know if you have been here https://www.garagejournal.com/
Its the kind of place that will make your nipples hard. Good luck with your project. You may want to consider a loft in one end to keep all the stuff you will accumulate. Never enough room no matter how big it is.

Cheap, non scented cat litter does the same job. Buy whichever is cheaper.
works great on hydraulic oil. your right about scrubbing it in with your boots. I worked in a scrapyard when I started if the shear was down we had to clean the room with the hpu in it. Worked great concrete looked good

If you want really cheap sound system and dont need a radio, just get an mp3 player and hook it up to some computer speakers mine can be heard outside with all the doors shut. The speakers were free and only paid 20-30 bucks for the mp3 player.
If you dont have electrical run to it you can buy some heavy duty triplex and its rated for underground or in the air. just need to put some stuff on it where it hooks up to copper. If money is tight it is cheaper and you can pull a lot of juice with it. If money isnt a problem then run copper. Scrapyard is a good place to get it. They may have copper also.

I’ve used purple power and push brooms/brushes for heavy oil stains with pretty good results.

I would imagine a decent pressure washer would save you a lot of elbow grease though.

What he said.

Alternatively, the sound system in my shop is made of various speakers, a head unit and an Amp I pulled from the JY. I think I have a total of $20 in it, and it rattles the floors above the garages when I turn it to 11.
