Rusty Version 2.0, what i found...

Coulda been a 2.8/C5 (auto) combo?

Either way, went and picked up a new delphi pump today from autozone. I didnt know they will price match rock autos price + shipping. Got a 79.99 pump for 48.97 out the door. Hey, 30 bucks is 30 bucks.

Now, the fun of trying to get 31year old spring couplers loose. Those things kick my ass everytime. Yes, i got the little tool, but i got so fed up trying to change the fuel filter on my 97 i finally said screw it and took it to the shop and paid them to do it.

Anywho, pry wont get back under it till this weekend or possibly monday. If you see a video of it running, youll know i won, if its a profanity laced rant asking for advice, youll know i lost.

The four cylinders had a C3 3 speed automatic... which is what the infamous A4LD morphed out of.

Your results may vary on price matching Rockauto. Our O'Reillys would until they got a new manager.

I coulda sworn there was a C5 as well though, mated to the 2.8...or am i confused? I knew about the C3 though.

That's correct - '83 and '84 2.8 automatics got the C5. In '85 they switched to the A4LD. That was one of the convenient aspects of a 2.8 -> 302 conversion. All you needed was to get a 302 bellhousing from a C4 or C5 and position the motor in the same spot, then keep your existing driveshafts and transfer case.

Yeah, four cylinders had the C3, 2.8 had the C5. A4LD replaced them both.

You can build a 2.8 C5 to a V8 spec but they are different inside.

Mine was "rebuilt" when I bought it so I don't really know what I have. It has taken 2x the power of a 2.8 for 7 years as of today though.

Not sure how engine placement plays out, my V8 C5 bellhousing is massively deep. I have never seen a V6 one but I don't know if they are as big. FWIW my transmission crossmember slid ahead and fit perfect in the forward set of holes in the frame.

I didnt know they ran the C5 behind V8s. What was the difference in them and a C4?

A bit of discussion -HERE-.

Hmm. Thats interesting. Ive pry wrenched on them or a vehicle with one and just assumed it was a C4. Ive had alot of C6s and a few FMXs, but guess these fell under my radar. I didnt even know they existed untill i joined here.

My old '81 Granada had a 255 V8 and a C5 trans. That thing would just chug along on the highway at like 200rpm, I swear.

It must have had steep gears, the best a C5 could hope for was 1:1 like fourth in most 4 or 5 speed manuals.

When my wife (gf at the time) had been around long enough to felt comfortable enough to ask I got a "shouldn't it shift one more time?"

"Nope, that's all she's got" :icon_twisted:

I got a (non running now) 77 LTD II with a 351W/FMX, and a 2.50 rear gear.

That sumbitch wouldnt shift to 2nd at WOT untill about 57mph, it would peg the speedo in 2nd, and it floated way to bad to push it out in 3rd.

IIRC most grenadeas (see what i did there?) Carried a 2.75 rear.

With 3.73's and 31's I run about 2700rpm @ 60mph in my Ranger. My torque converter doesn't lockup though, most replacement ones don't.

No clue what gears it had but they were very tall in any case. It's amazing that car could even pull away from a stop light with the tiny amount of power it made.

Wasn't quite as bad as my buddy's Maverick - that had a 200ci inline 6 if I remember right. Plus an automatic behind it. He had to get a run at the shop when we pulled it in - if he stopped where the gravel and concrete met, the car didn't have enough power to push itself up over the lip.

I know maybe like 3 people on here might be interested in hearing me ramble about fixing up the seperated at birth brother to my old 87 ranger, affectionatly known around this place as "rusty", but, im gonna post progress and other things here and there about the truck im deeming "rusty 2.0"

Uh, if we aren't all interested in reading about what the others on this site are doing, then why are we all here?:icon_twisted:
