well guys the ranger is in need of a new paint job considering i got a new bed/an fenders to replace the rotty ones... i was originally going to go with a single stage paint for 80 bucks an still neeed to get the primer/ reduced activator an all that good stuff.. so i started to surf the net an forgot about the rustoleum paint job.. for less than 50 bucks for a new paint job i dont mind putting effort into it.. ive seen a lotta guys have used the brush on technique.. iam going to go with the spray technique.. i brushed on some metal primer on the bottom of the bed yesterday cuz it was really flaky an rusty.. an decided to mix up some flat black an shot it with the gun today.. came out great.. i mean yeah its my daily driver truck ive sunk a bunch of $$ into it but all in all i think this would be the better solution considering it would be cheap/ readily available at any store if it ever needs to be touched up an best part is doesn't need a primer.. ive got a spare hood so iam going to do a little test on that tomorrow an see how it comes out..

any one else have any success on trying this? i check out pirate 4x4 an theirs a TON of fellas over that that have done thats an they look amazing!

yeah i saw that ive done some homework... like i said most have rolled it on.. iam gonna give a try on spraying it..ive got the guns an what not so might as well.

Yeah I figured that thread has been around, but thought I'd throw in out there. From everything I've read, you have to thin the paint A LOT. But it sounds like you have it under control.

i shot a test piece today an thinned the paint with some acetone.. did about 20% .. well i noticed it sprayed good.. let it dry was dry to the touch an i then wet sanded it 1500 grit then polished/waxed it.. looked like some one rubbed sand paper over it.. not sure what happened their an i also found out that yeah it was dry to the touch but you could scrape it off with your finger nail it was like it was soft.. i read that others have used mineral sprits to thin it.. could that be the issue as to why its not " hardening" up

i did two 40.00 paint jobs one on a mustang and one on a dodge daytona about 5-7 years ago...the mustang i sold so not sure how the paint did but the dodge i had for over a year and held up great... i got it at home depot rustoleum safty yellow for the dodge and white for 20.00 a gallon plus paint thinner 9.00 tape and sand paper = 40.00 paint job...sorry about the pics being out of order... photo bucket was not working all that well i could not view the pics b4 i put them on here

Looks like you did just fine, on both those paint jobs. They both look great, especially for the money spent.

I thought about doing a simple rattlecan paintjob or doing something like rustoleum....

Till I was strolling through the local Tractor Supply a couple weeks back... They have some oil based paints for equipment... not all that expensive and should resist rust WAY better than rustoleum. When it comes time for me to paint something next, I'm likely going to go up there an get a gallon or so of good oil based equipment paint and a couple cans of hardener. I didn't know you could still get oil based paints anywhere.... they have both primer and a selection of like 20 some different colors, plus rattlecans to use for touch up.

Tractor Paint!!!! I love that stuff. I have seen several paint jobs done with tractor paint and they all held up great. I know a guy that did his dump truck in "john deere green" like 10 years ago and when he recently took the thing to the scrap yard it looked just as good as when he painted it.

I have done some fenders with a rattlecan that turned out awesome. I ordered paint from Pronto that matched my stock colors, primed, and shot it...three years later, NO rust, and one rock chip. I would do it again, but not a whole car. For that I'd definitely try the foam roller approach.

One of my Rangers is painted with Rustoleum and a cotton roller. You can definitely tell. I get comments all the time, but it was mainly just to make the damn thing one color :)

well the ranger got painted.. ended up making a deal an bought a gallon of single stage gloss black an shot it yesterday.. didnt come out bad for what we had to do.. damn weather rained fri so we had some body work to do in the garage.. an shot it the next day.. damn dust.. o well..
