Rusted out Valve Covers

I don't have an A/C compressor on my truck so hopefully that will cut my tear down time down a little. It gets real hot up here during the summer so not having A/C sucks sometimes. But when it comes to engine work, i LOVE the compressor not being there at all.

not having the ac will help. if your do not have an egr that will help even more.

that is what give me most of my issues. the egr tube is a pain in the ass.

with all the plumbing and connectors, it is a bit of a pain, butfor the most part all the connectors will only go where they need to go, so you can't get them mixed up. its more of an aggravation than anything, but you gotta remember to get everything plugged back in vacuum hose and connector wise, and with the sheer amount of stuff that you have to remove or unhook, I gave it a 7 out of 10.

Good luck with the project, and if you have any questions, give me a holler...

Did they make this a sticky yet? If not it needs to be. It is the most thorough write up one could ask for for the VC's and Intakes..

i have seen a few that the valve covers rusted out. i have even seen oil pans on ford and chevys rust out

A buddy of mine went to change the oil on his '92 Crown Vic (4.6L) and when he went to turn the wrench the entire oil pan bottom caved in. You would think ford might put something a little more robust on these for rust proofing.

I do have EGR but the tube is only a year old. It was tough to get in though. I may be able to unbolt it from the valve and just keep the tube in the intake, as the bolts aren't to rusted yet only being a year old.

Living in Buffalo I can tell you that oil pans and any other pressed steel part can and will rust out.

this will make your life much easier if you can do this. my egr is pretty rusty, I would be opening a pretty big can of worms if I tried to remove it.

Never realized they mined rust belt other than here in Detroit :bawling: If it lasts a minute or mile longer than the warrenty it's overbuilt. To bad they never made some cool chrome or aluminum A.M. ones. Luckily found some good ones on CL for my son's 94.

I just changed the driver's side valve cover on my truck. Bought it new from Ford because there are no replacements. $60.00. Rusted out and leaked badly. Reason is a big opening on the fender area from the factory that leaks water, snow, salt into the engine compartment. Fairly easy to change. Make shure to retighten the lower intake bolts. Mine were loose and were also leaking oil. Is a common problem on some Rangers as I learned on the Tech area. Now my truck is working perfect with no oil leaks. Even oil presure went up...

Good to hear! I still haven't done this, Need to get around to it before i ship out for the military. But being a 15 year old NYS daily driven truck, I'm trying to keep the repairs minimal, as its pretty much losing the battle with rust right now and it won't be kept out of the JY for another 5 years...
