Hey guys... I have a Ford Ranger 1987 4x4 that im recently started having issues with. Well I live in Arizona where it's super hot lately, a few weeks ago after driving the Ranger for a good while around the city I started to feel like it started loosing power like if there was no fuel, kept running for a few miles untill it turned completely off (felt like I ran out of fuel). Pushed it to a gas station and to my surprise the Gas Tank was almost full (Fuel gauge not working). Well I went ahead and started the car and it ran great and had no issues.

A few days ago it did the same thing, but this time it only ran for like 5 minute and then it would die again while driving. I let it cool down and then eventually it would keep on running for a few miles. While all this happend I noticed my Starter Solenoid switch gave out and I had to bridge it to restart the car again, but it would eventually die again.

What does this sound like to you guys? Seems like it had pressure at the fuel rail since I pushed the little valve stem on the rail and fuel came out pressured. I was reading a bit on the TFI and it seems there's a heat issue with them, so im not exactly sure. Also could the Starter Solenoid swith (right next the the battery) have anything to do with the running then sputtering/shutting off? :icon_confused:

TFI Module on the back of the Distributor. All of us with a 2.9 has had this problem! To remove it, you just have to remove those 2 small bolts and unplug it from the harness and distributor.

Welcome to the boards (and beautiful truck!!)

lol I had an 89 escort GT that did the exact same thing on me. I threw parts at the darn thing and had every tech at the ford place I worked at look at it and finally sold it. A few years later I joined TRS and they have a writeup on it in the tech section. I miss that little car. Sorry for the reminising and the thread jack.

So the only way to fix this is by relocating it again?

Thanks for the comments!:)

Just buy a new one. It takes a special tool but it's cheap then install new one make sure u put the heat grease on it.

Yeah no reason to relocate it. Just get a new one and call it a day.

And yeah..Unless you have a 7.7MM socket, go for the tool. It fits great in a glove box (along with a spare tfi!)
