I have been having a lot of problems with my little 4 banger since I changed the Plugs/wires/Oil. Gas milage went down to 18, then to 15, Back up to 16 :yahoo:

I have spoken to many people about it and tossed a lot of parts and money at it, Nothing helped much  When I was speaking to a friend he made an off hand remark about the dual plug head on that lil 4 banger. "Did you make sure not to cross the plug wires?" I looked at him like he was a bit crazy, but I checked them out anyways. (after he left)

What do a know! they were all kinda higgly jiggly mixed up, and I had JUST gotten it back from the dealer TOO! I picked up a set of wire holders (to have lots of them!) and went to work, I made sure they were running next to and parellel to each other and if they DID have to cross another that I left at least an inch or more space between them, I also noted that the crummy clips that held them to the Coil packs were pretty flimsy too, so I used a wire tie on them to keep them from popping up.

Now my engine keeps pulling all the way up to 6K when it used to get sick about 4500 or so, the rough idle went somewhere else (GONE!), and I took it on a 500 mile trip over the Labor Day weekend, Averaged 20MPG there and 21 MPG Back! Not 30MPG by far, but she does have 4:10 gears, about 140K on her clock and still getting 175 PSI Comp. in 1-4 and 170 PSI in 2-3 I can handle 20-22 MPG, with the way I rev and beat her, I shouldn't expect much more than that! LOL

Good luck all! Something so simple it is easily overlooked!

On another note, what are the opinions of putting in a T-case and rear end lockers? (but not the front axel) I would like to use the 4Low for pulling my boat out and for riding some muddy trails, not 'real' offroading, just something a little extra for off the pavement.

Sounds like a plan to me. low range makes reversing a trailer so much easier.

low range is great for traffic jams...

hey man i have a 92 2.3 that was doing basicly the same thing, and have been tring to figure it for allmost 6 months (thats how long its been scince i change tha coil packs and plug wires) except i put aceel stuff on mine.

so THANKS FOR THE POST

I don't have that problem with only one set of plugs, but I've ran into issues with wires arching out and causing all kinds of problems...I always use the plastic clips, and always keep the wires away from metal and other wires...

It's a good practice...hopefully others catch on to this idea though...plenty of 8 plug heads out there that are running funny for one reason or another...one less thing to have to check if they follow your leader...:icon_thumby:
