Running Rich?

could be anything, whens the last time you did a tune up?

My mechanic should have done less than 3,000 miles ago but im gonna go ahead and give it one this weekend.

if you have a mechanic, have him fix your problems. alot easier to diagnose this kinda stuff in person.

Thanks mark ill get some of the dividers and see if that helps as well, but one thing for any one who might have an idea why the lack of power in fifth gear, even on flat highway?

Fifth gear is, essentially, overdrive...and not to be used when you are trying to gain speed, climb hills, have sex with a chicken, or anything that requires any kind of engine torque to get you through something...

I drove my first Ranger in 4th gear almost constantly on the highway...it was a bit harder on gas, but the highways I was using are not flat enough to warrant shifting that much...

You can save gas with fifth gear though...it lowers your cruising rpm...

Well i put new wires and plugs in. Made sure the gap was right even made sure the wires were seperated. Still runs like shit, so now im gonna replace the coolant temp sensor but, the place gave me a two prong and mines one so, here i come dealer.

Your truck does have a diagnostic port. On an '89, I believe it's on the passenger side fender somewhere.

Get the codes read I have a obd-II so don't know exactly but it is on the fender and u junp somthing with a paperip and count the flashes on the cel. If you change the tstat only put in a MOTORCRAFT

Well the problem is the ford dealer wants $125 just to run diagnostics. While a Dobbs wants $100. Actually the thermostat i have is motorcraft so ill put that in once i get a new coolant temp sensor.

Forget the code reader, and stop buying parts and throwing them at it, hoping you chance on a solution. You can read the codes with a paperclip and the check engine light. It does nothing more or less than a $25 scanner would do. All you have to do is jumper two terminals at the diagnostics port and the system goes into test mode.

Well that being the case if my truck isn't throwing a CEL will the paperclip method work, and is there a certain area in the forums to check for code listings?

Thanks, Rich.

I am Confused. Go get a paperclip and find the thread that shows how you use the papercip to make the light blink. Then if there are codes post them. I don't exactly how to do it I have a obd-II
