My 94 would occasionally loose power when I was driving. Then it would start running fine again. It finally got a little worse, where I could stop when it was running rough so I could check it out. I put an inductive timing light on the plug wires. On the front coil 1 & 4 were firing while 2 & 3 weren't. On the back coil 2, 3, & 4 weren't firing. When it was running ok, all 4 were firing on the front coil, but on the back coil 3 & 4 still weren't firing. I'm not sure if the back coil makes any difference in the performance or just the pollution. I have a couple of ideas what might be causing this, but wondered if anyone has seen this problem or knows the most probable cause.

Have you checked the system for KOEO and KOER codes? I suspect you'll get a couple of clues to lead you towards the ignition module, but running the diagnostics (all you need is a paperclip) is the place to start.

I'm having the same issue, I've been doing some research and I'm narrowing it down to ignition module. sometimes it will run fine (low boost), others it will spit, sputter, backfire and surge...

Additional info

Here are the codes:

KOEO Codes per my Haynes manual
111 System Pass
172 System indicates Lean Bank #1
223 Loss Of Dual Plug Ignition Control (Dual Plug EI) (per www.troublecodes.net) (not in Haynes)
224 SPOUT Circuit open

KOER Codes per my Haynes manual
1st time
998 Hard fault present
224 SPOUT Circuit open

KOER 2nd time
211 Profile Ignition Pick-Up Circuit failure
172 System indicates Lean Bank #1
332 Insufficient EGR flow present

Not sure why I got the 2 different sets of codes on KOER.
211, 223, & 224 look like they may be an indication of the problem. Any opinions?
