My 2.9 has 115,000 miles and I was wondering if 10-30w royal purple full synthetic would do any damage to my motor or if it would be of use. Im not looking for horsepower just a solid dependable oil specially after hearing how bad the 2.9 is at oiling the top half of the motor. any input would be great thanks again drew..

Royal Purple or any other synthetic will not dmaage an engine. Not sure why everyone is so afraid to use synthetic. Royal Purple is a fine oil, but IMO overpriced. I highly recommend you ask this question on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php. You'll get lots of good recommendations on people who really know their stuff, including many people who actually work/worked for oil companies.

Running anything synthetic in a 2.9 is a waste of money IMHO. I pulled 279k out of mine with good quality dino oil.

I think running synthetic in a 2.9 is a waste of money because of Head gasket and head cracking issues (and I am not talking about I have one 2.9 that had cracked heads.... every 2.9 I have owned has had head issues)........

that being said ....... I would only use synthetic with by-pass filtration..... it is so damn expensive I want to get every mile I can from it.

I disagree with every post posted in here. For starters, full synthetic is going to be better than conventional in ANY application. Ive owned 4 2.9s and never had a cracked head on one, so thats my personal exp. I am an Amsoil dealer and run it in everything, My 2.9 in my 88 runs much better with it. I gained about 2-3mpg, smoother start ups, runs cooler, and I change the oil once every 15,000miles or so. (Amsoil is 25k or 1 year and thats all i put on it in a year). This particular 2.9 has had it for approx 25,000miles, I have the BTDC advanced, cold air intake, 58mm tb and full catback exhaust.

Being an Amsoil dealer I am obviously somewhat bias... but I used mobil1, royal purple and Amsoil before becoming a dealer and IMO is by far the best product.

Im kinda with the above post but IMO I wouldn't even put purple in my lawn mower. Its just not a very good oil along with kendall oil. Mobil and ams oil get my top picks for synthetics, but I don't use them. Just good ol valvoline or castrol but, I would stay away from anything made by Pennzoil never see anything good come from them they don't even use there own oils in there race cars that should tell you something

C'mon guys! Oil is just oil! Where is any PROOF that one is actually better than the other? There simply isn't any proof! All you hear is guys saying how they love what they are using. And we all use something different from others..
Myself? I use what EVER is on sale when I go down to the jiffylube place. It don't matter one bit what they put in there. It all does the same thing.. Oil is simply oil! That is all there is to it.
And anymore oil in the can isn't even made by the folks on the label! Oil is canned and then branded with whatever brand the purchaser requires. This is done at 4 different oil canning plants around the country. Where ever you are you get the exact same oil in one can as you would get from any other can... regardless of what it says on the label.
All this synthetic hype is simply that HYPE! Where does it say what the rewards will be from using the high priced oil? All you read is guys saying how good the oil is... Nothing else.
Use any of it... it's all the same.

The big difference as a study showed as conducted by our armed forces is that the stability to thermal breakdown of the synthetic oil means that they do not change the oil as often and with dino oil. That means far less waste oil to dispose of, which makes it more environmentally friendly, and an overall savings of around 60% in costs even though the oil is 3 times the cost

Even the Petroleum industry itself admits that the use of synthetic oils will save you at the gas pump.

Switching to synthetics is not a bad thing, it is better for your rig due to increased oil performance and better for our environment all the way around. That is a win win situation in my book

I got 15,XXX on the Royal purple in the minivan ...... still clean .... I have bypass filtration and change the royal purple oil filter at 10,000 miles (bypass and engine filter) I don't change the oil until the lab says I absolutely have too..... just changed the spark plugs 3 months ago so I had the upper plenum off..... changed the valve cover gaskets while i was in there and you can eat off the top half of the motor...... nice and sparkly clean at 165K......

we shall see what happens. i just recently did my valve cover gaskets on the truck and it appears that the previous owner did a horrible job at changing the oil. The valve covers were covered with what looked like about a inch of straight up shoe polish. it was that thick and black and nasty. I was told by multiple sources not to flush the engine but to squeeze the most miles from the motor would be to switch to a full synthetic becuase it helps break down sludge.. this is what i was told by about 3 different people.

before you switch to full synthetic you must take other measures though, you cant just switch straight across.

like what type of things must i do before switching

why can't you just switch right over?.........
