I bought a '98 Ranger XLT 4X4 OffRoad recently, and at the time it was stuck in 4wd. The seller went underneath the truck, in the center, and he disconnected this small silver component that he now had in his hand. He "chocked"it (his words) "just cost me more money" (my thoughts)...so that it would stay in 2wd. It had a peculiar name that I can't remember. My truck just has the switch on the dash for switching 2wd/4wd. I am sure someone knows what it's called...please help Seems like it was like an "accuator motor" something like that, and I THINK it had an electrical connection as well, which would make sense if I am not locking in my hubs from outside! I feel kind of silly, and I have climbed underneath my truck looking for it...was just gonna take it to my friend and ask him what its called because I need to order a new one...can't find it now! Can't go into 4wd. Not going to the parts counter calling it "the thing that..." and looking like a fool :icon_twisted:

Yes there is a a "actuator" motor. Some people also call it a shift motor. It will be on the driver side of the transfer case and it should have a set of wires plugged into it. If you have a camera or your phone takes good pictures take a couple from different angles and post them so we can see what's going on. I'm not sure what he would have done to "chock" it. What did he do with the part he pulled out?

I am not sure what he did with it, I THINK he put it back in. I had a friend with me and he crawled under there that day too. He told me he knew where it was at. The seller was a true moron and burned me on the truck pretty bad! He said the price for a new one was like $68. or something, but the guy who does all my auto work said it's probably like $650. from the dealer. I wanted to know what the name of it was so I could find out which price was right...MAJOR DIFFERENCE! I know what it looks like, but I couldn't find it the other night...probably poor lighting. Next time he is in town, I will have him show me where it is and I will try to get some pics. It fits in the palm of your hand and a little bigger than say, a Snickers Candy Bar

I know how you feel. I brought my 1998 Ranger Extended cab four wheel drive a couple of weeks ago. Now it has no reverse. Now I have to buy another transmission or have it rebuilt.
