I have a 1996 Ranger with a 4.0 with 284000 km's on it. Recently about 2 weeks ago) when I start my truck while the engine is cold it starts really rough. I usually just give it a little gas and that seems to help a bit, and once it gets going the engine runs fine. When the engine is warm it starts perfectly as well. Winter is just starting to come around it seems as the temperature has been between -5 and -20 celsius in the last couple weeks, so is this just cold weather f*ing with my engine or something worse? :dunno:

Its possible your IAC is not working correctly. The IAC should idle the engine up when its cold.

Cleaning the IAC may help.

Before replacing the IAC its a basic soleniod just apply 12 volts to it to see if you can get it to click.

If the IAC is clicking I would then start looking deeper for things like engine temp sensor. not the gauge sensor. the truck should have 2. the computers sensor and the gauges sensor.

I would also clean the MAF sensor while I was at it.

Its also a old truck, my 92's IAC works fine. But it still doesn't like being cold. I just plug mine in for a hour. Its fine after that.
