I have a 1998 XLT reg cab with the 2.5l 4 cyl engine with automatic 2wd. i believe 4R44E transmission but i don't kno for sure. The transmission would flare then shift roughly into gear from 2 to 3rd. We took the truck to a local transmission shop, they said it needed new solenoids so we replaced all four of them. These little electronic gizmos cost us $475 :bawling:. Now it still shifts rough from 1-3 gears PLUS it flares when shifting about 1/2 the time when the truck is hot. We then took it to the "premier" local transmission shop. This shop told us the engine needed a tune up before he could even begin diagnosing it. He told us the symptoms could be either transmission or engine. Yet a third shop tells me it could be a bad servo causing the eratic shifting. Any advice/thoughts on how to procede with this problem? I am willing to pay for a complete rebuild if I need to, but if there is a simple fix i would hate to waste the money.

Thankz in advance,
Tom

I'd first do an ATF flush n'fill and filter change. Then I'd replace the input turbine speed sensor. It's not costly, and may cure the problem.

Here is a thread about this tranny's common shift issues. I would do a tune up on the engine first too. I just cured a shifting problem on my Honda just by replacing the distrbutor cap and rotor. :dunno: :yahoo:

I would take it back to the tranny shop that put the solenoids in and ask for your money back or fix it right.

Failed valvebody gaskets are a very well known common failure on these trannys. Any compitant tranny shop would know about it and know what to do.

They had to drop the valve body to put these 4 new solenoids in. Is it possible they fixed the original problem with the replacement of those parts, yet screwed up the valve body some how by removing it?

You dont have to drop valve body to replace solenoids...it would of been nice if they replaced EPC solenoid as well...as i have seen these cause a lot of problems especially the early units.

I would still take it back to them with the problem and see what they say... you have nothing to lose by taking it back and ask questions.

My 99 XL 2.5l has been doing the same exact thing! I appreciate all the input and will def look into all these options. Ain't got $$$ for a rebuild!!
