I have a 03 Ranger XLT extended cab auto 4x4. Don't know what tranny it
has, it is a v6 40 engine. When it warms up, it clunks when shifting
into 2nd, from a stop. had the tranny and transfer case oil changed
and it was fine until I took a 200 mile trip, now it is doing it again.
I have 80k on it. and only 300 miles on the oil change. Hate to take it to a
transmission shop, have heard all the horror stories.

Does it shift well other than the clunk? check your universal joints.

Yes it shift fine except for the clunk. It only clunks when it has warms up
and when I come to a complete stop, if I make a Calif stop it shift into
2nd with no clunk.

Mine does the same thing...i believe the previous owner put the wrong ATF in it. When we drained it, the fluid was not nearly as Thick or viscus as the "V" that the tranny calls for. Knowing we couldnt get it all out we have changed it twice since then and the clunk keeps getting softer. Your discription is 100% exactly like mine,,,,,Oh during the second time we installed a drain plug in the pan.
