rough idle and shuts off

My 1997 ranger V6 4.0 will bog down and sputter when I let off the gas, and I've had it shut off twice today while either driving or idling, what could be causing this

IAC valve is what computer uses on Cold Starts to set idle at 1,100 or so RPMs
And engine stalling could mean IAC valve is stuck, not allowing in enough air so engine can idle.

Does your idle go high on cold starts, and then slowly come down as coolant/engine warms up?
If not then IAC Valve is not working as it should

When you start any fuel injected engine, without touching the gas pedal, RPMs should go above 1,500, warm or cold engine, and then drop down to warm or cold idle RPM setting.
Computer opens IAC Valve all the way when key is turned on
Then when engine starts, RPMs above 400, computer will start to close it to set idle based on engine temp.
You can test IAC valve after removing it by plugging in its connector and then turning key on.
IAC Valve should be open all the way, unplug connector and it should close all the way, plug it back in and it should open all the way again.
Repeat until you are satisfied it is working/sliding OK, or it is NOT working
