hey guys, i just picked up at 06 ranger about a month ago and i noticed when changing a sparkplug that i was getting some chracol collered stuff on the back of my hand from rubbing on something, well turns out its a hose thats disintegrating. now im wondering why its doing this, and more importantly why? im worried it may be a fuel line and i really dont want it bursting while driving, so if you guys have any ideas as to what it is that'd be great! im gona drive it over to the local ford dealer and have it looked at as i have a 4 year 80,000km warranty i bought. ill get a pic up as soo as im back, but it says engine with an arrow on it, it connects from the intake to some moduel on the drivers side fender well inside the engine bay, the looks like from that unit runs down the frame past the firewall to the back of the truck. hopefully its just a vacum line but we shall see. :bawling:

heres the engine:

In this instance a picture is worth 1000 words. It is probably insulation or the anti-chaffing material that has come off on your hand. Not a bad idea to have it checked out for peace of mind though.

right or left side of the engine? etc..

and remember location.. location.. location

i had charcoal stuff on my hands from the drivers side engine bay on some hose maybe they all just rub? it was a 2001 ranger with 3L i didn't put much thought in to the black stuff coming off.

Better rotting hose than rotting flesh....lol

It's rubber....... it breaks down, heat water etc. etc....... Odds are it's not going to kill you, the rest of the hose is probably fine just the outside is getting rough, if it's really rotting, like you can pick chunks out with a finger nail, I'd look into it, but not before then but I'm also the guy that got 210k miles out of a stock timing belt. If it's rubber, I doubt it's fuel line.

Had my t-belt changed at 145,000. When the mechanic showed me the belt later that day, I felt the same way.

It should be replaced every 90,000 miles on a 2.3 Ranger, right? It's either that or every 70,000.

sorry bout that guys it just got home. i took it to the mechanic and he said it was part of the evaporator? i dont know to much about this engine but im gona guess thats inportant. he said unless its leaking (which then i pointed out "so id have to come in on a flatbed truck for you to fix it") that they wouldnt do any work to it. :icon_confused: im uploading pics as i type this and ill edit my original post to show you them. their a little dark, but very high quality as i couldnt find anything other then my nikon d80 lol

Well from that last description I'd say it almost sounds like the insulation for one of your A/C lines is coming apart. The evaporator is part of the A/C system. It's like the heater core, only cold.

EDIT: After reviewing the visual evidence that appears to be an EVAP line. It's part of the evaporative emissions control system and it could set off a few codes if it goes out, but won't cause the vehicle to become unsafe to drive. Run it until it breaks, they ain't cheap.
