c) Around 85/86, started using roller lifters on some aplications.

i wondered if anyone could help narrow this down for me in an 86 E-150

I believe only in Mustang , Crown Vic police, Lincoln LSC. Dont know for sure but truck application may never have gotten them.

IIRC, Truck blocks were roller-ready, but never came with roller cams from the factory.

Wrong info...........................:nono: The pickups and van 5.0's got roller cams in 1992 with the same small roller the Vic/Town car/Marquis 5.0 used. Then in 1994 they got a much improved roller (this one was called the F4TE cam) that's just a step below the HO cam on the intake side. This cam was later used in the 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0. Prior to 1992, the pickup/van 5.0 had a roller block but with a flat tappet cam starting in 1986.

thanks badd, wasn't sure if you'd want to post?
so your sayin' 86 is roller ready, but to 93 it was flat tappet or a reduced base circle/ crappy roller lifter(or just refering to low lift)?

i'm thinking of using the drivetrain in my stang(with mass air mustang induction/management) and the saginaw pump setup on my ranger.:icon_thumby:

 My mistake. I often forget that the 5.0 lived on outside of mustangs well into the 90's and beyond. In Canada the Mercury brand was killed by Ford a long time ago. We never got the Mountaineer nor any 5.0 exploders for that matter. I remember going to local yards asking if they had 5.0 explorers and they looked at me as if they were saying "what have you been smoking...and where can I get some of that?"

All 5.0's in 92~96 Econoline, F-series and Bronco had roller cams. The 92~93 E/F/B roller cams were conservative. 94~96 E/F/B got an all around better grind that made more power, revved more freely and idled more smoothly.

As stated above, the improved 94~96 E/F/B truck cam was also used in the 96~2001 Explorer 5.0L.

Maybe im talking out my ass...but wasnt the Truck 302s cammed for a little more low end and the Car 302's cammed more for midrange/topend?

later,
Dustin

Mustangs and other Fords with the 5.0 HO engine had a better RPM cam than the trucks. However, the newer cam in the 94~96 E/F/B truck (and 5.0 Explorer) was a better performer than the average mild 5.0 car cams.

Correct in that the 86 to 91 pickup/van 5.0 had a flat tappet cam in a roller block. The roller cam used in the 92-93 pickup van 5.0 was the same low lift/short duration cam the 86-91 full size Ford/Lincoln/Mercs used in their 5.0's. But it was not a reduced base circle roller cam. It's not a crappy cam, it did what it was designed to do in these cars.........bottom end torque.

We definitely got the V8 Explorers and Moutaineers. I have seen enough of them with Ontario plates on them to make me think they were purchased in Canada. Alot of the junkyards don't list them in their online inventory because there always seems to be one or two local guys that will buy any or all of that stuff. I deal with a yard out of Listowel that has had a few of those trucks.

yes we did get the v8 explorer and merc's in canada i live near wingham 1 hour north west of k-w i know there there are a few i all most got one brand new up hear so we did get them.
